Beautiful metaphor

I was reading a review of a couple of books written by John Banville.
Apparently, he also writes crime novels under the pen-name Benjamin Black.
(He once described the difference between the two writers like this, "Banville writes meticulously; Black just writes fast.")
Now I've never read Banville, or Black, but the reviewer noted his style (Black's, that is) by quoting from one of the new books:

“Quirke’s flat had the sheepish and resentful air of an unruly classroom suddenly silenced by the unexpected return of the teacher.”
